Current UK knife law states that you need to have a “lawful authority or reasonable excuse” to carry a non-locking folding knife with a blade longer than 3 inches in length. In practise this implies that for activities such as forest work, bushcraft or deer stalking it is OK to use a larger knife with a fixed blade or a locking folding knife. However, in other situations when you want to have a knife with you “just in case” or for “general purpose” you need to use a non-locking pocket knife with a blade under 3 inches long.
